The movie was good, thought it was a little slow to my tastes, but it had some nice scenes of actions, and of course Ziyi was in it. But what I hate to see is Ziyi smoking, and we see plenty of this in the movie. I hope she didn't came addicted to that monstrous thing after that movie. Ziyi looks so sad, all the movie :-(

I have the mainland Chinese version (R0, PAL) of the film and thanks to Frank, I also have the N American version (R1, NTSC). But I've yet to see either.
Yeah, I here it's weird whatching Ziyi as a chain smoker. But the role is obviously something very different for her. Critical reviews of the film are mixed. Many didn't like the original edit, while many do like the more recently edited film.
I saw the trailer for PB at comingsoon.net, looks really cool. It showed people lighting up but it also showed alot of people with guns (including Ziyi). Alot of shooting. And the music in the trailer was cool. Very dramatic and sad, but soothing. I wonder if it's on the PB soundtrack.
OK....I'm way behind but, I just saw PB just 5 minutes ago. WTF!!!!???!!! I get the occupation of China by Japan and the Chinese revolting against the Japanese and all the cloak and dagger stuff that I would venture really happened during WWII (Or was it I? My history is so rusty it's a sin). But, again I say WTF??!!! Here's Ziyi's characters thoughts near the end of the film as far as I could tell (since the dialog was so sparse):
"OH MY GOD!!! I almost just got killed and I watched the man I loved (or used to love) get killed and I just killed several people and I've got blood all over me! I think I want to go fu*k my brains out now with a man I haven't fu*ked in a year to get my mind off things."
And what the hell was the innocent girl that got killed at the train station doing on the street car at the end of the film?!!!
What the hell was the moral of the story? I hope it was supposed to prove that ANY war is totally a waste of human life regardless of who's side you're on. But, sheez! I loved the hand held look that just added to the chaos and instability of everything. But, that was just it. The whole thing was nothing but, chaos. Very nicely done, and written, and acted, and directed, and all but, damn! It made my head hurt and my stomach too. I think I'm gonna go out and join a revolution and kill me some people now. : lol.....
Not to mention it made me sick to see my darling Ziyi chain smoking! Sorry for my ranting but, it was disturbing to me. Now I'm gonna have to go to sleep to get that crap out my head!
This movie could very well have been the hardest movie to follow that I've ever seen. I'm usually really good at understanding movies, no matter how complicated, but this one just kept me confused. I think it was the lack of dialouge that did it. I didn't know the characters names, and (not to sound sterotypical or whatever) the male characters all looked the same to me (I knew who Ziyi was though! ) *shrug* maybe I'll watch it again right now, I don't have anything better to do. Well, thats all, goodbye.
Well, it's not just you, uhgreen. The film was criticized at 2003 Cannes and back home in China for the confusing editing. That's why it was welcome news when it was first heard that the N American release would be edited (reference), though it's still difficult to follow.
Hmmm well I have the north american release... I can't imagine a more confusing edit. I still loved the movie though. I loved the atmosphere, it was so bleak. It fit the mood very very well. The lighting was also good.
And thanks for the welcome! :-) I've been in love with Ziyi for a while, and I've browsed the forums for a while, I'm more of a lurker though... I'm trying to be more assertive. I can't be shy on the internet like I am in real life! That's not healthy!
yeah I've liked Ziyi for a while too. I was originally at the Zhang Ziyi forums at imdb.com but then Arnold (Southern Crane) saw me and asked to join here. That was along time ago, like 2 years ago I think. I've been coming here ever since, this is a great site about Ziyi, it really is
I watched this for the first time lastnight and must be the only person who didn't have trouble following it. Then again, I do really enjoy picking the story apart when I have watched a confusing film, like Mulholland Drive.. Memento Mori.. Maybe I'm getting good at it!
I absolutely loved the film, anyway. It was just beautiful. I agree about the smoking, could have done without that but that's only a small gripe.
THE ENDING IS NOT THAT CONFUSING, AFTER DING HUI (ZIYI) WATCHES ITAMI (TORU NAKAMURA) BE KILLED. THE DIRECTOR JUMPS BACK TO THE POINT, (TARANTINO STYLE) TO WHERE THEY WERE GOING TO THE TRAIN STATION, THAT EXPLAINS THE YOUNG INNOCENT GIRL ON THE STREET CAR , SHE WASNT KILLED YET, SHE IS ALSO ON HER WAY TO THE TRAIN STATION, TO MEET HER BOYFREIND, WHERE SHE WILL BE KILLED. I HOPE THAT HELPED. ALSO IF YOU GO BACK TO THE FIRST SCENE OF THE GIRL ON THE STREET CAR , THERE IS A PART WHERE THE CAR STOPS AND THE CAMARA CLOSES IN ON HER, AND IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SEE ZIYI AND THAT GUY SHES WITH COMING OUT OF THE BUILDING. PAUSE IT , SHES GOT THE LONG BROWN LEATHER JACKET. CANT WAIT FOR THE BANQUET. LONG LIVE ZIYI!!!
The editing was horrible then if there were supposed to be flashbacks....flashbacks only making sense but, the film was still confusing. Could have been done a lot better.
Believe it or not, the recent N American theatrical release and R1 DVD were edited from the original film to lessen the confusion. I can only suspect it was a better edit.
I have both -- a studio copy of the R1 (Frank's company is the one that did some work on the master film and he sent me a copy) and the original Chinese on R6. Unfortunately, the latter doesn't have subs.
I just saw purple Butterfly, and I liked it. Being a smoker myself, Ziyi's so obviously not a smoker. In fact her smoking wasn't very believable as the exhaled smoke exits her body too quickly...
This movie is so frickin boring. The only reason why I got it was cuz Z's in it. When me and my friends watched it, everybody fell asleep except for me. I thought it was one of those movies that get better as it progresses but nope, it was a total bore. Same thing w/ In the Mood for Love. I've learned that very, very slow-paced movies just aren't my thing. The only reason worth watching PB is that hot Japanese guy.
Purple Butterfly is great if you're a fan of non-verbal acting...which I am. Zi's a master in capturing emotions without dialogue .I'm going out on a limb here and saying that this is my new favorite ZZ film.
You kind of have to be in the mood for 'In the Mood'. I first saw it late at night, and I was tired. Saw it again on a Sunday morning, with a fresh cup of green tea... loved it!
Didn't like PB either. Couldn't follow the story. Had much trouble differentiating the actors throughout the movie and what 'side' they were on. Didn't help when characters were killed off then suddenly re-emerged quite alive. Not even Ziyi could save this dog of a flick.
Have it, but have yet to see PB. 'In the Mood for Love' is a great film, though. But I probably wouldn't screen it for a large group of friends. They likely wouldn't appreciate it like I/we do.
I agree that Purple Butterfly has a frustrating progression. And I do agree that it could have been edited better, if it was... then I think it would have been not only Ziyi's best film, but on par with great films like the Godfather and Scarface.
